My first band Charley Marlowe was a duo with the performance poet Francesca Beard, that project combined spoken word and singing. I felt like writing a song on Between Dogs and Wolves where I could have an element of both spoken and sung words. It's the longest song on the album, it's like a long poem about the past, about those pieces of ourselves we leave behind, that we try and find and that we go looking for. It’s about memory and nostalgia.
lyrics
Pieces of ourselves we left behind
When we made our way back across the great divide
Pieces of ourselves we lost out on the track
Each day the flame burns more candle in the wax
Every path I've found opens up to you
Shards of memories I sought to hide
When we had no choice but to smother all the light
Shards of truth uncomfortable within
I kept their secret closed under the skin
Every choice I made led me back to you
When dreams are skin and skin is torn
When kings have crowns and crowns have thorns
Fragments and remains that flashed before us
When we sought to fill all the spaces in the gaps
Fragments that we hurled so hard into the breach
I ran from the shock and then kept you out of reach
Everything I've lost drives me back to you
Pieces of me in word I spelt too late
Now that the door is closed and I'm out on the street
Pieces of me still remain yet to die
Somewhere the truth was held hidden from our eyes
Even the unknown still belongs to you
When dreams are skin and skin is torn
When kings have crowns and crowns have thorns
When lives are thread and thread is worn
When kings have crowns and crowns have thorns
